Professional Earphones Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is a function of exposure time, the average noise level and the peak level of very loud sounds. Some people are more susceptible to hearing loss than others, so that protection on the basis of an average time and sound level exposure will only protect the 'average' person. Sound pressure is based on a logarithmic scale and expressed in Decibels (dB). Each time the decibel level is raised by a factor of 3, the intensity of that sound is doubled i.e. it is twice as loud. When the intensity is doubled, the safe listening time is halved. The graph above shows how quickly safe listening times are reduced as the sound level rises. Note that Legislation applies only within the workplace. Outside of the working environment, it is up to the individual to safeguard their hearing. Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is normally a gradual process and goes unnoticed by the sufferer for a long time. It is not possible to rectify this type of hearing loss once the damage is done. It is permanent. Despite being their most important piece of equipment, musicians have a tendency to neglect their ears and take for granted their ability to hear. Years of experience within the music industry have provided ACS with the knowledge to identify the particular needs of the individual and develop a range of products specifically for musicians, DJ's and clubbers. The problems associated with hearing damage (whether temporary or permanent) through exposure to noise are well documented. However many musicians are either unaware of the problems or ignore warning signs, such as temporary loss of 'top end' or the increased experience of tinnitus.
